Washoe County Commissioners postpone the Gary Schmidt decision

ALERT: #67
DATE: March 14, 2004
TO: Incline Village & Crystal Bay Property Owners
FROM: Nevada Property Tax Revolt Committee

Dear Fellow Incline Village & Crystal Bay Property Owners,

First, we would like to thank all the individuals who emailed the Washoe County Commissioners with their support for Gary Schmidt. Over 150 emails were sent in and are now part of the Washoe County Commissioners’ files.

At last week’s commissioners meeting, they voted 3 to 1 to table the decision on whether to remove Gary from the Washoe County Board of Equalization.

Our representative to the Washoe County Commission, Jim Galloway stated, "I voted not to proceed. Why go forward if you're not planning to do anything?"

The Village League believes the Washoe County Commissioners were caught off guard by the huge support for Gary Schmidt. The Commissioners quietly wanted the situation to go away.

From what we have heard and read, the whole situation started with the Chairman of the Washoe County Board of Equalization, Steven Sparks, complaining to the Washoe County Manager, Katy Singlaub, that he was going to quit if they could not stop Gary from asking so many questions and analyzing each property tax appeal.

We feel that if taxpayers are concerned about their taxes that their appeals SHOULD be analyzed.

The next Washoe County Commissioners meeting is March 22. We will let you know the outcome of the Gary Schmidt situation, and if they decide to vote on Gary Schmidt’s censure or removal from the CBOE (County Board of Equalization).

Thank you again for your support for Gary Schmidt. It really turned the tide for him.

.

One more subject:

The Washoe County Assessors filed an appeal of our 8% land valuation roll back to the State Board of Equalization just before the March 10th deadline. This appeal will take several months to resolve. There is a host of complicating background issues. Again, we will keep you informed as details become public.

Sincerely,

Maryanne Ingemanson
